From simple beginnings…
The Buttonwood tradition began in 1946 when Chester and Helen Kempinski opened their Buttonwood Bakery in a small town in northeastern Pennsylvania. Chester’s and Helen’s business values and goals were as simple as the times – to share their traditional ethnic bakery items with others, and to treat their customers like family. With these guiding principles and their hard work and strong desire to keep traditions alive, Chester and Helen successfully grew Buttonwood Bakery and achieved their vision for the business.
Some things just don’t change – thank goodness!
In 1986, their son George and his wife Sandy, took over the bakery. Although times had changed and life was not as simple then as it was in the 1940’s, George and Sandy were determined to run the business with the same values and business practices that the Kempinski family was known for. The old-world recipes for their signature products – nut roll and poppy seed roll are the same. These delicious pastry products, are still packed with the finest ingredients like California-grown walnuts and freshly ground, not canned, blue poppy seed. Every item is hand rolled with care and comes out of the oven with a homemade taste and texture that even after 60 years has no rival. Each customer, on every order, continues to receive the “like-family” attention that was started by Chester and Helen. And while pricing cannot be as it was in the 1940’s, the Kempinski’s continue to make their incredibly delicious signature products at prices one might say are old-fashioned. With their daughter Alicia now involved in the business, the Kempinski’s look forward to keeping these great ethic traditions alive and well.
The Future
Over the years, as Buttonwood’s business continued to grow so did their reputation. As word spread about their delicious products, the Kempinski’s were receiving more and more telephone requests for their signature products to be shipped to customers all over the country. Now, with their on-line store, you can order them any time, all year long.
